Illustration I did for local death metalers and friends Chapel of Ruin. I'm not 100% with it, mostly due to the awkward pose/composition, but it really worked for the CD. I might do an alternative illustration for when I release their demo on cassette.
This is work I did for the upcoming split between Borrowed Time and Wytch Hazel. This hasn't been my favorite project, due to my own crazy delays from personal problems and Borrowed Time rejecting the painting I did for their side (the top painting) for it's concept, and then issues with trying to get the Wytch Hazel side photographed. At least it's all done now, even if only half of the work I've done is getting used. After being in contact with Terra Caput Mundi for years, doing a few smaller pieces of artwork for t-shirts, demos, etc, and sharing some adventures into Baltimore I have finally been able to put forth considerable effort to adorn these futuristic speed metallers 2nd full length with my illustrations. The first and primary illustration is the painting above for the cover, and after I take care of two other painting commissions I will complete several other black and white illustrations to emulate a tabletop gaming manual for their album booklet.

Seth Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14296789848761629684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7579413960494177026.post-66952981833692785512012-04-03T15:45:00.002-07:002012-04-03T16:38:52.141-07:00Faustcoven - "Hellfire and Funeral Bells" ReleasedThe LP version of the 3rd Faustcoven full length is out now on Nuclear War Now! I seem to have a bunch of friends in St Louis for some reason, so it made sense for me to lend my goat rendering skills to the newly formed Rites of Impiety for their first demo and t-shirt. I don't really get to draw a lot of typical black metal goat demons for bands for some reason, which is unfortunate as I enjoy doing so.
While drawing logos certainly isn't my favorite creative endeavor to take on, it does offer a lot of ego gratification and association with the band, since unlike most illustration, a logo is used repeatedly for everything a band puts out and is thus even more intrinsically linked with the band's imagery. This is even more true for a label, who will usually have the logo on every release they put out.

Even though it's one of the more simplistic logos I've done so far, a deceptive amount of thought and planning went into it's overall look.
Unlike most people who do this, a year or two later I received payment and a description for a logo. Kudos to Helgardh for being the first band to do this. Yet more artwork for Borrowed Time. It was an interesting challenge putting this together, as I wanted to get the most depth with the least amount of colors. It was also nice using digital color again, as I've mostly been doing everything traditionally with only digital touch ups.
I've been done with it for around a year (not sure exactly when I did it actually), but since it is the largest piece of artwork that I've done that will be reproduced on an album cover (15"x30"), it needed to be professionally scanned. Scanners that are large enough to take such artwork are both rare and expensive machines, and thus are an expensive service as well.

I finally found a place in Lynchburg, VA that had one, and had them scan the drawing. I'm still not sure that it was a better option than having a professional photographer shoot it, but since I'm not in as close of contact with the person who has a lot of experience with that now, and I didn't have to deal with any blurry edges or carefully adjusting levels and contrast, it was a neat experience. I might be going that route more often for commissions.

The drawing itself is done in the same style as the last two, although I tried to add a lot more depth and darker values in this one. There's a lot more specific details, as I tried to incorporate many of the songs themes into the cover. I wanted to do something that you could look at for a long time, finding new details, although this is no "Somewhere in Time".

This illustration for the interior was a bit easier to scan in as it was just small enough to do at home. I had trouble with meshing it together though, as I had somehow managed to accidentally cut the physical drawing in half. I had thought that this would actually make the illustration easier to scan, but without being able to overlap the two sides it proved impossible. I carefully taped it back together, and even then it required a lot of digital edited to make it presentable.Seth Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14296789848761629684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7579413960494177026.post-20037371663165073742011-10-25T00:01:00.000-07:002011-11-17T10:44:11.736-08:00Funeral Empire Zine IV

After a whole lot of delays (this was supposed to be out by Memorial Day) for a whole lot of reasons, and coming very close to not being printed, this zine is finally at the printers and will come back either today or tomorrow.

I mostly contributed the layout and many of the interviews and reviews this time around, only doing the illustration for the cover. I feel that I should have done more extensive illustration for the rest of the zine, but I was too distracted by other commissions and trying to pull together all of the material from the two other writers. This really let me try my hand at writing several lengthy interviews, this time with Father Befouled, Blaspherian, Wastelander (their last interview?) and Satan's Satyrs, as well as continue to hone my ability to write a review that doesn't sound like it came from an over enthusiastic retard.

I'll have a small pile of these to sell and trade with friends. The bulk of them are going to Diabolic Distribution in Baltimore, and a few will go to Planet Metal in Chicago and He Wang, also in Baltimore.

I'll be starting on my own independent zine soon, which will ideally be a lot bigger, more lavishly illustrated and more atypical, but will obviously take me a lot longer.Seth Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14296789848761629684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7579413960494177026.post-31918705691945447272011-09-08T17:55:00.000-07:002011-11-17T10:43:30.709-08:00ShowsA couple of flyers I've done fairly recently for shows that any one should go to if they can.

This is a free show in Lansing comprising of crazy good local bands.

This one's in Baltimore. Unfortunately Bitch dropped out as the headliner (and this also meant I had to digitally edit the painted in logos), and now Baltimore's recently reformed Tension is taking the spot.

Coming soon on Dying Victims Productions with two new, studio recorded songs. This is really great stuff in the vein of Manilla Road, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
